Decoding Dental School Applications: Criteria, Exceptions, and What You Need to Know to find your perfect fit

While there may be many questions erupting in their minds, all the candidates want to know which schools are best to apply to and which offer the best chances of getting accepted. No one can tell you the answer to this question, but what you should keep in mind is which dental school is best for you.

As all schools have set criteria for the selection of applicants, the candidate needs to know where they fit in perfectly. We have jotted down a few exceptions to make it simple for you.

 All schools require the candidate to be fluent in English, and the candidate needs to pass the English proficiency test. While the TOEFL test is the gold standard accepted by most dental schools, there are a few exceptions that do accept IELTS.
They are:

  • The University of New England College of Dental Medicine
  • Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine

There are a few schools that are not particular about having only ECE evaluate your degrees and so accept ECE or WES. They are as follows:

  • University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry
  • Howard University College of Dentistry
  • University of Florida College of Dentistry
  • Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine
  • Tufts University School of Dental Medicine
  • The University of New England College of Dental Medicine
  • T. Still Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health
  • University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry
  • Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey School of Dental Medicine
  • Touro College of Dental Medicine
  • The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine
  • University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine
  • Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry
  • Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry
  • University of Washington School of Dentistry

Though most universities prefer ECE, there are a few that prefer only WES.

  • Western University Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine

The program prefers candidates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents but will consider all well-qualified applicants.

  • University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry
  • Western University Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine: International applicants, or any other applicants who are not U.S. citizens and who are living in the U.S., must provide proof of legal U.S. residency before matriculation.

Must be a United States citizen or have a permanent resident visa (green card) and proof of your status.

  • University of Florida College of Dentistry
  • Touro College of Dental Medicine

Must be U.S. citizens or u.s. permanent residents (green card holders).

  • A. T. Still Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health
  • Tufts University School of Dental Medicine
  • University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry: who has completed a dental degree from a country outside the United States and Canada.

Must be a resident and provide proof of residency

  • University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry
  • University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine

Must be proficient in the spanish language

  • Must be proficient in the spanish language

Must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, a canadian resident, or eligible for a U.S. student (f1) visa to apply to the program

  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine

Some exceptional requirements:

  • University of Minnesota School of Dentistry: All citizens any applicants admitted into the program who require an F-1 visa will work with the University of Minnesota International Student Scholars Service office to obtain an F-1 visa and any F-2 visas for eligible family members.
  • Columbia University College of Dental Medicine: New York State Licensure requires six years of education before the Advanced Standing program (one year pre-professional, five years professional).
